An easy walk today only 11kms. We decided to take the easy way out and have our backpacks taken on ahead to Vila Franc de Xira. The cost was well worth it E14.55. Much of the walk was along roads but between Alhandra and Vila Franca there was a 3km coastal walkway. Alhandra is a pretty fishing village with tile fronted houses. I had fun using Google translate in the morning. Google isn't very good when people speak too fast - the results can be quite hilarious. Our accommodation in Vila Franca was in a six bed dormitory, three sets of bunks. The night time chorus is quite entertaining. At one stage it sounded as if someone was calling the in the cows! Food is cheap. Our accommodation last night cost E21.50 for dinner, bed and breakfast. I have decided against ordering meat in the future unless I need to repair my shoes! Images I will remember from today, the man who stood and applauded as we walked past, the pretty church on the hillside, the walkway by the river.
Very sad to hear the news from home that Sr Stephanie Kelly had died. She introduced me to Chanel Centre and made sure I knew everything I needed to know. She always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye.
Starting from top left. Alhandra tiled house, Alhandra Street. Constantine and Molly Moo checking out Alvaro Guerra. The team posing beside an interesting sculpture at the start of the coastal walk. Mural depicting a pilgrim. Village church on the hill. Constantine with his favourite drink. Molly Moo and friend catching some sun. In case you are wondering how Molly Moo and Constantine ended up coming on this pilgrimage - well, Molly Moo stowed away, but Constantine insisted on coming because as he rightly explained, his ancestor was a famous emperor who had thousands of soldiers, so if we get into trouble he can call on his rellies to help. I think I am too gullible!
