Capella and Cemeteries

Some of the constants on the Camino are the wayside shrines, capella, small chapels, and statues in the front gardens. My Aunty May had large statues in her home, but here you find statues of all shapes and sizes in gardens. If there isn't a statue there will be a tiled mosaic of Our Lady, the Holy Family, or one of the saints. St Anthony is a favorite. My Aunty May would have been at home in Portugal! Other fascinating places are the cemeteries. Elaborate headstones, mausoleums, miniature chapels etc.there were some today that looked they could have come out of an Adam's Family movie! The cemeteries are very well set up for those visiting graves. Water, buckets, bins all supplied. They even have WC, very handy for passing pilgrims! Today we went from Sao Jaoa de Maderia to Grijo, apart from a couple of small lanes it was all along roads. Stopped at a supermarket and bought lovely fresh hot pastries for breakfast. Then a little while later were able to buy some super fresh juicy strawberries from a local selling fruit and vegies from a van. Two highlights, the beautiful statue of the Black Madonna at the Grijo Monastery and the cafe near by. I remembered the cafe from four years ago and was delighted to find it still open . They have the most wonderful array of cakes, breads, and pastries. We met up with Stephanie, Jim and José again so suggested they make a slight detour to check out the goodies. They were very appreciative. Tonight we are in hostel in Grijo, tomorrow Porto.
