Some of the things that stand out in Portugal are the sculptures that tell a story of days past. Unfortunately, the explanations are not always in English. We saw some great ones in Barcelos and again in Ponte de Lima. Clue, spot the interloper!
Yesterday we walked to Ponte de Lima, famous for its medieval bridge. The sculptures along the riverbank are incredible. My efforts at photography don't quite catch the skill of the sculpture who manages to convey the movements of the characters portrayed. Jay decided Jay could have been part of the Roman legions, expect they's spear skills weren't up to standard!
At the little chapel by the bridge we lit many candles and said a prayer for Marcus. Jay just had to photo bomb the large Camino sculpture.
Our walk today was along very picturesque paths, rivers and through villages. Most of it uphill. There is no way I can keep up with Jay so I just make sure I arrive in one piece.
On the way out of Ponte de Lima we met Manuel who stamped our Credentials, gave me some roses and told Jay to look after me now and forever. We pointed out to him that he doesn't have NZ on his wall of pigrim countries of origin. Hopefully, that will be rectified by the time Jay or I return. I shall remind Jay of what he said every 10 minutes! We stopped at Cafe Viega and had brunch, bacon and eggs, it was yum. As we left the owner gave Jay and me more flowers.
Next on to Labruja where we are staying in a B&B, very flash. After all the uphill work the welcoming glass of wine was perfect. The B&B is owned by a Dutch couple who bought and renovated it 4 years ago. The decor is interesting, see the photos.
Tomorrow we climb to the top of de grande Labruja, I really hope we are halfway already.
Of course along the way there were the odd cat, dog and lizard Jay befriended.
It's now 6 20pm and from our B&B we can look out over a valley. The hills all around are dotted with villages, each with its own church. There is a succession of Angelus bells ring out over the hills, it's quite beautiful.
