This evening (7 May), we arrived in Viana do Costela. In the last three days we have covered 84 kms. After two days walking on boardwalk along the coast it was good to get back on to country lanes, through small villages and forests. Today we met the delightful Maria Gabriella who makes the best cafe com leiti in Portugal. We also met Donkey Donkey who knew exactly how to entice a carrot out of a backpack.
We passed through some beautiful scenery, some of which had a very NZ feel to it. Walked over an ancient stone bridge, passed iron age ruins, and visited the first church outside of Spain to be dedicated to St James. Hopefully, I will be able to add some photos tomorrow. The internet connections are not always secure.
The Portuguese really celebrate their artists (and their footballers). In nearly every town there is a sculpture depicting some aspect of Portuguese history. The first photo shows women and children lamenting a tragedy at sea of Matashino. The second sculpture depicts a lace maker. We also saw a number of old windmills. The further North we got the bigger the market gardens. In the photo women are cleaning onions. Our team, Cynthia, Chrissy, Win, Jacquie and Glenise, at the Camino memorial at Esposende. One for the grandchildren- today Molly Moo and Constantine saw an ocean that begins with A, what is it?
